Identifying whales with Happywhale

a whale swimming in a body of water

Happywhale is an organisation where anyone can send photos of whales and identify them by their unique markings. This enables them to track whales around the globe.

They use state-of-the-art image processing algorithms to match whale photos with scientific collections. This newly developed efficiency now makes global whale tracking more possible than ever.

Happywhale’s mission is to increase global understanding and caring for marine environments through creating high-quality conservation science and education.

@footloosefotography snapped this whale on a recent Noosa Oceanrider tour. He sent the pic to Happywhale for identification and discovered it is a female that was photographed near Hervey Bay in 1989!

Noosa Oceanrider regularly sends photos to happywhale for identification. To find out more on how you too can have your whales identified, visit their website https://happywhale.com/home

Whale Watching From A$95

One of Noosa’s most breathtaking experiences, there is nothing more magical than watching these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. Noosa’s aquatic backyard plays host to the humpback whales during their annual migration every winter where you can watch them frolic & play whilst taking in stunning natural cliff formations, lush emerald forests, pristine little coves and sweeping beaches.
